Universal Studios launched a brand new computer-animated movie known as Despicable Me in July 2010. Whereas mostly targeted to kids, as is usual these days, the film may even be loved by many adults. This Christmas, the Holidaysthe DVD are sure to be great sellers.
The story line of Despicable Me revolves around the main character Gru, a supervillain who needs to pull off something massive to maintain his notoriety. In his plan to steal the moon and achieve back his fame, he adopts 3 little girls to help pull off his heist. Ultimately, Gru is more interested in being a father to these girls than to being a supervillain.
The film is witty and funny and contains some unforgettable characters. There is Agnes who loves unicorns and her two sisters, Edith and Margo. The small yellow minions that assist Gru with all his "evil plans" certainly appeal to kids.
Merchandise based on the movie is out though mostly just on-line so far. There is a game for Nintendo DS, the Wii, and Ps 2 where you get to be Gru and design your next heist. There are also a number of books related to the movie included some some paperbacks for younger readers and a replica of the Sleepy Kitten book that Gru reads to the girls at bedtime.
Plush toys of various characters are additionally available online. There are a number of plush toy minions - Dave, Jorge, and Stewart. There are also plush toy versions of Agnes, Edith and Margo. The preferred toy to date appears to be a stuffed unicorn just like the one that Gru won for Agnes at the amusement park.
Also available are various movie posters and a Despicable Me calendar. On eBay you too can discover stickers and party favors for your youngster's next party.
And just in time for Halloween, Despicable Me costumes made an appearance and may still be popular for those kids that enjoy dressing up year-round. Amazon has some minion costumes and an Agnes costume. BuyCostumes.com carries a Gru and a Vector costume, probably more appropriate for teenagers and adults.
As the Christmas season approaches it's possible that more and more Despicable Me greatgames can be released. When the DVD is launched in December, the combination of the DVD and a toy may very well be a big hit as a gift for many kids. Or perhaps even just the DVD or Blueray disc would make a great addition to the home movie library.
